What is a career ceremony?

A career ceremony is meant to connect us to the small and big transitions throughout our professional life. They give us time to pause and reflect, and they invite our community to celebrate what we've gained or grieve what we've lost. A career ceremony marks the beginning or end of a chapter in your career trajectory.

Why are career ceremonies important?

Careers don’t look the same as they once did. We rarely go into a job for an entire career. That means we'll have many first days and last days. There will be promotions and lay offs, parental leave and business failures. When we foster a culture of celebration, acknowledgement, and appreciation, we see clearly the value we give and receive.

How do you create a career ceremony?

What is really important to you when it comes to your career? If it's work friendships, then find a way to honour those. If it's things you learned, find a way to incorporate that into your ceremony planning. Perhaps it's recognition and celebration. Consider all of those aspects when you set out to create a ceremony applicable to each chapter of your career.
